چکیده

We describe a general construction of a module A from a given module B such that Ext(B,A) = 0 and we apply it to answer several questions on splitters, cotorsion theories, and saturated rings.

Symmetry of Ext Vanishing over Non-commutative Rings

It is proved for certain graded non-commutative rings that if M and N are graded bi-modules, finitely generated from either side, then the Ext groups between M and N vanish from some step if and only if the Ext groups between N and M vanish from some step. Among the rings in question are twisted homogeneous coordinate rings of elliptic curves.

Symmetry Theorems for Ext Vanishing

It was proved by Avramov and Buchweitz that if A is a commutative local complete intersection ring with finitely generated modules M and N , then the Ext groups between M and N vanish from some step if and only if the Ext groups between N and M vanish from some step. This paper shows that the same is true under the weaker conditions that A is Gorenstein and that M and N have finite complete int...

An Approach to Represent and Communicate Product or System Design Ideas at the Fuzzy-Front End of the Design Process

The primary challenge underscored and dealt with was how to represent the product’s or system’s use environment and processes and to communicate ideas and envisaged use contexts effectively at the fuzzy-front early stages of the design process. The work focused specifically on complex products or systems with physical, software and/or cyber components, and the question was how to represent, e.g...

The Thomified Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence

where Xs+1 is the fiber of gs. We get an exact couple of homotopy groups and a spectral sequence with E 1 = πt−s(Ks) and dr : E s,t r → Es+r,t+r−1 r . This spectral sequence converges to π∗(X) (where X = X0) if the homotopy inverse limit lim←Xs is contractible and certain lim 1 groups vanish. When X is connective, it is a first quadrant spectral sequence. For more background, see [Rav86]. In th...

Some applications of Gröbner bases in homological algebra

In this paper we make some computations in homological algebra using Gröbner bases for modules over polynomials rings with coefficients in a Noetherian commutative ring. In particular, we show easy procedures for computing the Ext and Tor modules.
